Google is answering for you now. Is your business ready?

, 5-minute read

This is a preview issue that shows the format. From the first scheduled run on, every issue is researched and written by the Lab Notes agent with fresh, sourced news.

Your customers are asking AI before they ask you. The businesses that win the next year are the ones whose answers show up in that chat window — clear, specific, and easy for an AI to quote. This week: what changed, and a 30-minute play to get your answers in front of them.

The brief

This week in AI 3 things worth your time

  • Google's AI Overviews can now grow into full AI-Mode answers

Google confirmed that for some searches, the AI summary at the top of results can expand into a longer, conversational AI-Mode style response.

Why it matters to you: More questions get answered on Google itself. If your site doesn't state prices, service areas and hours plainly, the AI quotes a competitor who does.

  • ChatGPT steps back from in-chat checkout, doubles down on product discovery

After testing native Instant Checkout, ChatGPT pulled it back in March 2026 and now sends shoppers to the merchant's own checkout. Meanwhile Shopify products reach Google's AI surfaces through Agentic Storefronts.

Why it matters to you: AI assistants are becoming a discovery channel, not a store. Clean product titles, real specs and honest reviews on your own site now decide whether you get recommended.

  • Claude now plugs into QuickBooks, PayPal, HubSpot and Canva

Anthropic connected Claude to a set of everyday small-business tools — accounting, payments, CRM and design — so it can work with your real data instead of copy-pasted text.

Why it matters to you: The 'AI assistant' is moving into the software you already pay for. Before buying another tool, check what your current stack can already do with AI switched on.

The AI play Do this in under an hour

Turn your 20 most-asked questions into an AI-ready answer page

The problem
You answer the same questions by phone, DM and email every week — and none of those answers are anywhere Google or ChatGPT can find them.
What you get
One page that answers customers 24/7, gets quoted by AI search, and saves the front desk ~3 hours a week.

You'll need: Gmail or Outlook search, ChatGPT or Claude (free tier is fine), Your website editor

  1. Search your inbox and DMs for '?' from the last 90 days. Paste 30–50 real customer questions into one doc — keep their wording.
  2. Run the prompt below. It groups duplicates, picks the top 20 and drafts answers in your voice.
  3. Fill every [BRACKET] with real numbers: prices or ranges, service area, turnaround, hours. Specifics are what AI tools quote.
  4. Publish it as one page called 'Questions we get every week' and link it from your homepage and Google Business Profile.
  5. Save the answers as canned replies in your inbox so the team uses the same wording everywhere.

Below are real questions customers sent us.
1. Group duplicates and pick the 20 most common.
2. For each, write a direct answer in 2–4 sentences, first sentence answers the question outright.
3. Use our tone: [FRIENDLY / NO-NONSENSE / PREMIUM].
4. Where a real fact is needed (price, time, area, policy), write [FILL: what's needed] — never invent numbers.
5. Order them from 'before buying' to 'after buying'.
